In 1997, several doctors, teachers and social workers of Domjur were indulged in social works for the sake of society. They formed an NGO which was the pre-natal state of Domjur DISHA. Afterwards the very organization was named Domjur DISHA. And it gets its registration in 2002 (Registration number S0108384 of 2002). Dr. Migendranath Sau, a veteran specialist of skin and venereal diseases, was the first President of the organization, and Dr. Monotosh Khanra, a senior pulmonologist has been working as a highly competent Secretary since its birth moment.
The preliminary objectives of Domjur DISHA were to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in our locality, to prevent marginalization of affected families, and to provide basic treatment to AIDS Patients. To substantiate the objectives, DISHA commenced its functions with continuous and comprehensive awareness programs to make people conscious of AIDS because at that time in our locality, the fatal disease loomed large in the common mass. A large number of local people were in the clutch of death because of AIDS. DISHA carried on its massive campaigning in each and every village and made people aware of how the disease spreads and what preventive measures should be taken, and so on. For proper treatment of the affected people, DISHA opened an HIV OPD where the patients were consulted free of cost and medicine Of AIDS was also arranged to supply them with a nominal cost. Since then, DISHA has been observing the World AIDS Day in Domjur on the 1st of December every year.
Now we have a great pleasure of relief that HIV/AIDS has been subdued to a considerable state and has almost disappeared. Young people have also been conscious of the precautionary measures to ward off the infection from their sexual intercourse. We, therefore, can proudly proclaim, “Had we not come forward to organize such constant and comprehensive awareness programs, thorough campaigning of do's and don'ts and free-of-cost counseling, it would have tended to a formidable dimension of breaking out of AIDS in our locality”.
Besides the anti-AIDS programs, DISHA has been organizing successful road-shows, panel discussions, various awareness programs, and other valid and captivating shows in expressing its wish to become a member of society. At present DISHA has indulged itself in the programs of curbing the attacks of Diabetes, Thalassemia, heart disease, obesity along with health check up of students of the neighboring schools. DISHA also hold continuous awareness programs with demonstration of models, charts etc. to inculcate a solid pro-science frame of mind to deal with the sudden cases of mishaps like burn injury, electric injury, drowning, snake biting, dog-biting, evil impact of smoking, ‘gutka’, wine, syncope, cardiac arrest, asphyxia, etc. In this regard, it must be mentioned that DISHA has been carrying on FIRST AID service for the aforesaid mishaps for a decade with grand prowess.
Every year on the 1st of July, the birthday of the legendary doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy is observed as Doctor's Day. DISHA also plays homage to the great man by organizing seminars to make people aware of different diseases, and also to provide them free diagnostic services by testing ECG, Spirometry, blood sugar, uric acid, blood group and so on. In 2020, despite of the adverse pandemic circumstances of COVID-19 we observed Doctor's Day, as usual, and for the first time we organized a blood donation camp successfully where most of the donors were the members of Domjur DISHA.
